The Church of Jesus Christ Recognizes the Importance of Work on International Workers’ Day

In the context of International Workers’ Day, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes the dedication and effort of millions of men and women in Central America who, through their daily work, support their families, drive the development of their communities, and contribute to the progress of the region.

For members of the Church, work is much more than an economic activity; it is an eternal principle and an expression of personal responsibility. The teachings of Jesus Christ emphasize that work dignifies, strengthens character, and enables service to others. As taught in the Scriptures, work has been part of God’s plan since Creation and continues to be essential to the temporal and spiritual well-being of individuals.

President Dallin H. Oaks, President of the Church, has taught that:

“Work is not only a temporal necessity; it is also a spiritual necessity”.

This perspective highlights that all honest labor, whether in the field, in business, in public service, or in the home, has value and purpose. From this viewpoint, work also becomes a form of service to God and to others, strengthening the social fabric and fostering more resilient communities.
